Set in tony north Scottsdale, the Willow Stream Spa at the Scottsdale Fairmont Resort is the epitome of spa luxury and elegance. This is the kind of spa that comes to mind when you think of celebrities idling away the day, getting primped and pampered. Would I feel out of place? After all, I’m not a member of the jet set. Or even of the upscale crowd for which Scottsdale is known.
I am happy to report that I had nothing to worry about. Although the ambience is luxurious, the service is friendly and down to earth. Everyone will feel welcome here, no matter how much they have in their bank account. Willow Stream Scottsdale has every spa amenity you could wish for including a rooftop pool with sweeping views of the McDowell Mountains. Once you get inside, you’ll want to spend the entire day here. There are only a handful of Willow Stream Spas at a few select Fairmont Resorts worldwide. The Willow Stream Spa Scottsdale is only one of two in the United States. The Fairmont Scottsdale Resort is lucky to be one of them. This expensive, sprawling Spanish Colonial style property, hidden away in northeastern Scottsdale, has pools, tennis, and a famous golf course – the Tournament Players Club (TPC) of Scottsdale. The spa is more luxurious than the resort, however, so we would recommend visiting the spa for the day and staying at another less expensive, Scottsdale resort or hotel. While Willow Stream Spa’s prices are on the high end compared to other Arizona spa resorts, this is such a beautiful spa with great service and amenities that’s it’s absolutely worth the splurge. ConceptWillow Stream Spa’s theme is "Find Your Energy."
To that end, the spa’s amenities and treatments focus on recharging each spa goer’s energy. Once restored, we can go out and live life to the fullest. Fairmont’s Willow Stream Spas are designed to be sanctuaries that not only facilitate revitalization but also reflect the beautiful environments of their locales. Many of the Scottsdale Willow Stream Spa menu’s treatments incorporate the local traditions, plants and herbs used by desert peoples for centuries. Therapies range from hydrating wraps that restore dry, sun-exposed skin to sports massages, which relieve the aches and pains spent from a day on the links or hiking in the desert. Thermal mineral baths and antiaging facials rejuvenate mind and body from the stresses of everyday life. Willow Stream Scottsdale also has an intriguing selection of spa packages, called "Body Experiences." Ranging from 90- to 125-minutes ($239 - $599), these packages let you experience a series of therapies focused on a central theme. The Desert Purification ($279/90 minutes), inspired by Native American traditions, begins with a sage smudging – an ancient practice said to purify the body for healing. This is followed by a body exfoliation with an ayate fiber cloth, a cornmeal, clay and oats body mask and a nourishing body massage with a desert-inspired essential oil blend. You’ll be both purified and renewed after these soothing therapies. AtmosphereThe Willow Stream Scottsdale takes inspiration from the desert and from the soothing and rejuvenating waters of the secluded oasis of Havasupai - famous for its blue-green waterfalls that tumble from the edge of the western Grand Canyon.
You’ll find water everywhere here - in mineral pools, waterfalls and burbling fountains. Large and lavish, the spa looks and feels grand but has a warm and inviting Southwestern contemporary style. Wood furniture, pale tan- and cream-colored marble tile, Sedona sandstone and Native American art evoke Arizona’s natural environment. The separate men’s and women’s locker rooms are spacious with the showers, lockers and vanity areas tucked into a series of smaller rooms to create privacy. The spa is stocked with everything a spa goer could need including Willow Stream Spa’s own line of aromatherapy bath products, disposable shavers, hair dryers and combs. The centerpiece of the locker room is a large whirlpool with an ornate Italianesque dome overhead. A cold plunge pool is nearby for a quick cooling down.
The relaxation lounge, where clients wait for their therapist, is a calm, soothing space stocked with fresh fruit, water and a delicious prickly pear lemonade. Outside is the Oasis, a warm pool where you can stand underneath a warm, rushing waterfall. Up on the roof – called the Mesa level – is a beautiful lap pool surrounded by waterfalls and fountains. Reserve a private, stripe-curtained cabana for relaxing out of the sun and enjoying views of Scottsdale and the craggy peaks of the nearby McDowell Mountains. This Scottsdale day spa feels like an ultimate destination. The Willow Stream Scottsdale’s amenities are so luxurious that the spa is worth a visit for them alone. My Treatment ExperienceI tried the Arizona Aromatherapy Facial ($169/60 minutes).
The Willow Stream Scottsdale spa menu listed this facial as a restorative treatment designed to ease tension and heal sun-exposed skin. My therapist was cheerful and professional, and carefully explained everything she would be doing. The treatment began with a close examination of my skin and determination of my skin type. Willow Stream Scottsdale uses the Kerstin Florian skin care line for many of their facials including mine. Kerstin Florian is a European style line of bath, body, facial and spa products based on natural resources such as thermal mineral water, herbs and essential oils. The family-based company was founded in 1978 by Swedish-born spa expert Kerstin Florian.
My therapist started by cleansing my face with a rehydrating neroli cleansing milk, which had an uplifting, orange scent. This was followed by a rejuvenating thermal tonic – a refreshing blend of floral waters that helps balance the skin. Next was a clarifying exfoliating scrub designed to refine the pores. She then set up a steamer which blew warm, moist air on my face. The steam helps open pores in preparation for the extractions. During the steam treatment, she massaged a rich satin lotion into my hands and placed them into what looked like over-sized oven mitts. These gloves were heated, much like a heating pad. The heat helps the moisturizer absorb into the skin. She then rubbed a soothing Kerstin Florian’s Kräuter Fuß Balm – designed to soothe and relieve sore tootsies - onto my feet and wrapped them in warm, moist towels. What does the unique name mean? Kräuter Fuß is German for "herbal foot." Next came an intensive Aroma Äkta lavender oil treatment, which balances the skin, and a rejuvenating firming eye gel. While those products did their work, she gave me a relaxing scalp massage.
The final flourish was a rehydrating antioxidant primer moisturizer and an application of SPF 30 sun protection – an absolute must for minimizing the effects of Arizona’s intense sunlight. At the end, my therapist gave me a couperose ampoule – a small vial of gentle botanicals combined with nutrient-rich antioxidants - that would help calm the skin and leave it feeling soft as velvet. The ampoule blend included arnica and horse chestnut extracts, butcher’s broom and jasmine. She also gave me a list of all the Kerstin Florian products that she used, which I could pick up in the spa shop. This was a soothing, rejuvenating treatment, perfect for anyone, but especially good for those of us who spend lots of time out in the sun. If your skin tends towards redness or you suffer from rosacea, this would be an excellent treatment for you too. Favorite FeatureNo doubt about it. Standing under the soothing, warm water of the Oasis Waterfall is the highlight of Willow Stream Scottsdale.
This massage-like experience feels incredible. Luxuriating under the rejuvenating flow of this roaring waterfall is a must when you visit. This is a co-ed pool but don’t be shy. Jump right in because the water is fine. FAST FACTS: Willow Stream Spa at the Fairmont Scottsdale ResortWhat to Know Before You Go:
