Driving from Utah to Arizona

Roads from Arizona to Utah Offer Some of the Most Scenic Arizona Drives

Go to Driving from Utah to Arizona directions:
From Western Utah | From Southern Utah |From Southeastern Utah |From Eastern Utah

There are several ways to drive from Utah to Arizona - from western, southern and eastern Utah.

However, there are no major, direct interstate freeways from Arizona to Utah.

All routes cross over the breathtaking red rock canyon country of the Colorado Plateau.

These secondary highways make for some of the most scenic driving in both Arizona and Utah.

Along the way, you can stop off at Zion National Park and the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Utah.

At the Arizona-Utah border, you can visit Lake Powell and the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

Once in Arizona, you have several great outdoor sites that are worth a stop.

These include the ponderosa pine forests of the Kaibab National Forest, the weirdly eroded rocks and canyons of Vermillion Cliffs National Monument and many scenic and historic sites throughout the magnificent Navajo Nation.

There is also the spectacular and less-visited North Rim of the Grand Canyon - all near the Utah border.

Note: weather conditions and other factors may close the roads or create delays in these areas.

If you are traveling in winter, be sure to check road conditions before you begin your journey.

The Colorado Plateau can receive very heavy snowfall and some roads may be closed or require snow chains.

To get from the western side of Utah to Arizona, you can take Interstate 15 (I-15) from St. George, Utah into Nevada.

This is the only route that is on a major interstate freeway.

From I-15, take Interstate 515 east out of Las Vegas, which is also part of Highway 95, through Henderson and head south.

This route eventually turns into to Highway 93 and continues in a southeasterly direction into Arizona.

See the page on Arizona driving directions from Nevada for more detailed information about driving Highway 93 in Arizona.

Driving the Southern Route from Washington, Utah to Arizona

Starting from Interstate 15 in Utah, between the towns of St. George and Washington, you can cut off to Utah Highway 212, which intersects Utah Highway 9.

Take Highway 9 and head east to Hurricane, Utah.

From Hurricane, take Highway 59 south, which eventually crosses into Arizona at the town of Colorado City.

Here, the road becomes Arizona Highway 389.

Highway 389 curves east into the town of Fredonia, Arizona. This area is known as the Arizona Strip.

The Strip is remote, rugged and sparsely populated.

At Fredonia, travelers can turn south onto Highway 89A, which climbs up over the Kaibab Mountains.

The highway passes by several great recreational areas including Jacob Lake and the Kaibab National Forest.

This is also the route to get from Utah to Grand Canyon.

The road to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon - Highway 67 – turns south off of Highway 89A.

To reach the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, you must continue on 89A.

The highway eventually drops down of the Kaibab Plateau and curves around the southern edge of the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument.

This portion of the highway is one of the most dramatic on this drive from Utah to Arizona.

Highway 89A joins Highway 89 about 25 miles south of Page, Arizona - site of the Glen Canyon Dam and gateway to Lake Powell.
