Unpaved Roads in Arizona

Knowledge and Preparation are the Keys to Safe Travel on Back Roads

Driving unpaved roads in Arizona offers some of the most scenic landscapes in the state.

The popular national parks such as the Grand Canyon, Petrified Forest and Saguaro National Park all have beautiful but unimproved back roads.

Even the outlying parts of Maricopa and Pima Counties - Arizona's most populous regions - still have dirt roads.

As an Arizona traveler, this can make for interesting adventures. However, before you begin exploring Arizona's back roads, be prepared.

Many dirt roads in Arizona require high-clearance four-wheel drive vehicles.

Regardless of the vehicle type, always use caution while driving on any unimproved road as they can be bumpy, rocky and uneven. Many are rarely maintained.

Dirt roads in desert areas are commonly referred to as "washboard", for the seemingly even-spaced ridges on the road reminiscent of an old fashioned washboard.

Drive slowly over these roads or you'll run the risk of seriously damaging the underside of your car.

After storms, dirt roads can become muddy quagmires that can trap you and your vehicle. So, it's best to avoid these roads when wet.

Unpaved Roads Travel Tips

  • Before beginning any back roads adventure, be sure your vehicle is in proper working condition
  • Carry emergency repair, safety and survival supplies in your vehicle.
  • Always inquire locally before you travel and check with the local Arizona Department of Public Safety office or pertinent public land agency to verify current Arizona road conditions.
  • Always let someone back home know where you are going and when you plan to return.
