Surprise Stadium

Rangers Spring Training & Royals Spring Training Stadium is a
Pleasant Surprise

Surprise Stadium is one of the Arizona Cactus League's two team sites, being home to both Texas Rangers spring training and Kansas City Royals spring training.

Though it is a relatively new stadium, having opened in 2003, we were surprised when we got our first glimpse of its architecture.

This beautiful, modern ballpark looks like it was built many years ago.

Looking across the field to the stadium's old-fashioned style roofs, we were reminded of just how old the sport of baseball is.

Surprise Stadium is one of the greater Phoenix spring training sites located on the far western edge of the Valley of the Sun.

Surprise Stadium has a spacious layout

If you are coming from the east side of the valley, keep in mind that it will take time to drive there.

Your reward, however, is a spacious, attractive 124-acre site with great amenities including many practice fields, ample parking, and a park with a lake just across the street.

Surprise Baseball Stadium is also one of the most family friendly of the Cactus League ballparks.

There is quick and easy access from the parking lot to the lawn area. Young kids will love the merry-go-round at the right field concourse.

Plus, because this is a two team venue, there is either a Texas Rangers spring training game or a Kansas City Royals spring training game here pretty much every day.

If you hate to leave your dog at home, visit during Dog Days.

Unique to Surprise spring training, this popular, annual event allows you to bring your dog to the game for a day.

Dog Days will be held on March 18 for the 2012 spring training season. The teams will be the Indians versus the Royals.

Luke Air Force Base is located south of the stadium. So, don't be surprised if you spot a fighter jet flying by during a game.

Although it opened in 2003, there is still plenty of undeveloped land around the ballpark.

So, for restaurants and shopping, you'll need to stop in at one of the many retail centers along Bell Road, northeast of the stadium.

Surprise Stadium Seating

Every seat is a good seat at Surprise Stadium. The outfield lawn seats are popular and a great place to have a picnic.

If you want to sit near your team's dugout, the Kansas City Royals dugout is on the left field side and the Texas Rangers dugout is on the right.

For special seating, you can upgrade your existing ticket into a Home Run Party Deck ticket.

This special section is located in right centerfield and has plenty of shade under a large white awning.

A party deck ticket upgrade includes stadium admission, entrance to the party deck, all-inclusive food and two drink vouchers. An upgrade offers two drink vouchers plus admission to the party pavilion.

Food and Drink at Surprise Spring Training

For the most part, the food and drink at Surprise Stadium is basic ballpark fare with cheeseburgers, Polish dogs and grilled chicken sandwiches.

You can also get Philly cheese steak sandwiches, chicken Caesar salads and fruit salads.

If you are looking for Mexican food, you'll find a Rubio's stand at the left field line.

Note: All food and beverages must be paid with cash, no plastic.

If you want to bring your own food in, the following items are allowed into Surprise Stadium: food inside a clear plastic bag, one clear plastic sealed one liter water bottle, empty plastic water bottles, single serving juice boxes, baby food and formula. No beverages other than water or juice boxes.

Autograph Tips During Surprise Spring Training

Texas Rangers spring training and Royals spring training is great for autograph seekers. That's because the design of Surprise Stadium puts the team clubhouses and batting tunnels close to the fans.

Show up early and head over to the dugouts to get your stuff signed.

Gates open 1½ hours prior to event time.

Parking at Surprise Baseball Stadium

Another nice feature of Texas Rangers spring training and Royals spring training is the free parking, a rarity at Arizona spring training ballparks.

Parking is in a large lot located right next to the stadium.

Surprise Arizona Hotels

There are only two hotels within walking distance of Surprise Stadium. All of the others are along busy Bell Road or Grand Avenue. As with other Arizona spring training sites, you'll need to book rooms in advance during March. See our Surprise Arizona hotel guide for a list of Surprise hotels.

If you're looking for a resort experience, the closest one to Surprise is The Wigwam Resort (300 Wigwam Blvd., Litchfield Park).

Located roughly 17 miles south of the ballpark in the town of Litchfield Park, the Wigwam gives you that old Arizona experience with its historic adobe casitas and Southwestern atmosphere.

The resort includes swimming pools, tennis courts, championship golf, seven dining options and an Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa.

Surprise Arizona Restaurants

Because there's very little commercial development next to Surprise Stadium, you'll need to head over to Bell Road for eats. There's plenty of chain restaurants such as Pei Wei Asian Diner & Chipotle burritos here, but we like several of the independent restaurants in Surprise.
