Scottsdale Arizona Vacation Destination Guide

Luxury, Art and A Hipster Vibe Transform This Phoenix Suburb Into an Urban Destination

Take a Scottsdale Arizona vacation and you'll be visiting one of the most affluent cities in Arizona.

This Phoenix suburb of over 234,000 residents is known for its upscale ambiance, expensive homes, and high-end shopping.

In fact, Scottsdale could be called the "Beverly Hills" of Arizona.

What draws vacationers to take a Scottsdale Arizona vacation?

Great weather and a chance to live the posh lifestyle - if only for a week's worth of vacation - at Scottsdale's lavish resorts, luxurious spas and spectacular golf courses.

Scottsdale Waterfront
The new Waterfront makes a great Scottsdale Arizona vacation stop

The town started as a modest farming community in 1888 when Army Chaplain Winfield Scott purchased land at what is now the corners of Scottsdale and Camelback Roads.

Over time, Scottsdale attracted and cultivated an affluent populace who wished to escape the more urban setting of Phoenix.

Hotel Valley Ho
The Hotel Valley Ho is once again a popular Scottsdale Arizona vacation destination

Although it calls itself "The West's Most Western Town," Scottsdale was never really a part of the Old West like the Arizona towns of Tucson and Tombstone even though it has the Old Town Scottsdale district.

Instead, the town has long had a wealthy, suburban air.

Scottsdale, however, has been re-inventing itself; undergoing an over $2 billion redevelopment boom in a 2-square mile section of downtown.

New or "spruced up" Scottsdale Arizona vacation attractions include:

  • the revamped Hotel Valley Ho - the circa 1956 lodging that was the hipster hangout of Hollywood celebrities like Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe,
  • the Scottsdale Waterfront - a revitalized Arizona Canal, which carries drinking water to thirsty area residents, now hosts hotels, restaurants, shops and public art along its banks,
  • the W Scottsdale is Arizona’s first W hotel with an infinity edge swimming pool with a sand beach, Bliss Spa and 18 luxury residences.

Scottsdale has evolved from a simple farm town to a faux Old West tourist stop to a hipster hot spot with trendy nightclubs, chic hotels, gourmet restaurants and swanky boutiques.

The famous Bob Parks Horse Fountain is one of the many pieces of public art found throughout Scottsdale

The money is still here but a hip, "young professionals" culture has infiltrated the scene.

The new Scottsdale is a multi-layered affair with retirees on golf courses, artists capturing the desert on canvas, Southwest curios shops, horse parades and a youthful, fashion-conscious crowd craving the ultra-cool urban scene.

What does all this mean for the Scottsdale Arizona vacationer?

That you have a wealth of amenities and activities to explore, including:

  • Over 70 luxurious resorts and hotels,
  • More than 25 day and resort spas,
  • Nearly 200 golf courses in Scottsdale and the surrounding area,
  • Over 600 restaurants offering everything from Southwestern to Mediterranean cuisine,
  • Hiking and biking in the Sonoran Desert at nearby parks such as Camelback Mountain and Pinnacle Peak,
  • More than 125 art galleries, studios, museums and over 1,900 pieces of public art - the city rivals Santa Fe and Los Angeles as an arts mecca,
  • A variety of horse, riding and Western cowboy events and activities such as the annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, the largest Arabian horse show in the world, and the Arizona Cowboy College, where "wanna be" cowboys learn to ride, rope and wrangle.

No matter what your interest, a Scottsdale Arizona vacation has something for everyone.
