Red Door Spa Tucson Overview
The Red Door Spa Tucson is part of the Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spas chain, which operates day spas, hotel spas and department store spas throughout the United States and Europe.Although it is part of the luxury Westin La Paloma Resort & Spa Tucson, the Red Door is not as lavish as the resort. The La Paloma Resort’s Red Door Spa has a trendy boutique-like feel. The spa menu offers a decent selection of treatments, but the service and amenities did not match the prices. This spa does not have the relaxing environment or lavish amenities that would make you want to linger here. | | The Santa Catalina Mountains tower beyond the La Paloma Resort and Spa | The Westin La Paloma Resort is worth a visit, however. This upscale Arizona resort sits above the city at the base of the dramatic Santa Catalina Mountains. It is popular for its upscale ambience and lush and scenic desert setting. The resort is also home to the renowned La Paloma golf course and the award-winning Janos Restaurant, famous for its Native American and Southwestern-influenced cuisine. Would I go back? I would give the Red Door Spa Tucson another try if I was staying at the La Paloma Resort. However, it would not be my first choice of Tucson spas. Back to Top of Page
The Red Door Spa Concept
The Red Door Spa Tucson has a basic offering of spa treatments. | | A red door marks the entrance to the Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa at the Westin La Paloma Resort | Their spa menu touts the Red Door Spas as an escape from the every day world, with an emphasis on beauty and age-defying treatments. In addition to traditional spa services like massages and body wraps, they offer the latest scientific advancements including microdermabrasion, glycolic peel; and PREVAGE™ anti-aging treatments. There is a long list of facials from Phyto-Organic to Multi-Vitamin Antioxidant ($145/65 minutes each). Therapeutic massages include Thai yoga bodywork, Shiatsu and Reiki ($140/50 minutes each). The La Paloma Spa also offers aqua therapy treatments ($60/25 minutes) in specially designed aqua-jet tubs. Aqua therapy is said to increase circulation, soothe nerves and and assist your lymphatic system. The 25-minute aqua baths can be taken alone or paired with other treatments. The Red Door Spa Tucson has a variety of half day and full day spa packages ($207 - $415) including bridal packages and "mother-to-Be" packages. The La Paloma Spa also has a Red Door salon that is part of the spa. It is a full service salon with hair services, manicures, pedicures and nail services. Back to Top of Page
Atmosphere at the La Paloma Resort Spa
Upon entering the Red Door Spa Tucson through the signature red door, the first feature I noticed was a towering, backlit photo of Catherine Zeta-Jones - an Elizabeth Arden spokesmodel. | | The jacuzzi at the La Paloma Spa | In addition to a small reception desk and overstuffed red velvet chairs, there is a prominent spa boutique with a variety of Elizabeth Arden beauty and skin care products as well as spa products from other companies. The interiors of the Red Door Spa Tucson have a polished, contemporary look with a Pottery Barn style. The spaces are brightly lit and have an open, uncluttered feel. The locker room is small and has a steam room. The small spa lounge, referred to as the "Serenity Room," is decorated with sage green walls and soft cushioned chairs and ottomans. A small table holds hot herbal tea and cucumber water. The La Paloma Spa has a small outdoor patio with a jacuzzi. Unfortunately, it is located right next to the La Paloma Golf Club parking lot. The spa does not have its own pool. Post-treatment, you can swim in the La Paloma Resort's pools, which are a short walk from the spa. Back to Top of Page
My Treatment Experience at the Red Door Spa Tucson
I arrived the suggested twenty minutes early for my 8:00 a.m. appointment only to find a small group of people clustered around the entrance. | | One of the five swimming pools at the La Paloma Resort & Spa | As it turned out, they were the Red Door Spa Tucson staff. Apparently only one person scheduled to work that morning had the code to turn off the security system. Unfortunately that person had not yet shown up for work. Other spa clients began arriving as the spa staff frantically called on cell phones, attempting to find a resort staff member who could open the doors. After about ten minutes of waiting, the late spa worker appeared and the doors finally opened. The other spa guests and I waited in the reception area for another 5 minutes while the staff rushed to prepare the spa for business. I was quickly escorted to the women’s locker room, with only enough time to change and get to my appointment. I signed up for the Elizabeth Arden Red Door Signature Facial (50 minutes for $130). Their spa menu describes this treatment as an individualized facial designed for your individual skin type and conditions. It includes a deep pore cleansing, exfoliation, customized mask, Olive Oil Lip Treatment and a face and scalp acupressure massage. My therapist was a young, woman with a somewhat reserved demeanor. As the appointment was behind schedule due to the spa’s late opening, I sensed that she felt a bit rushed through the appontment. After inquiring about which face care products I used, she began the treatment with an initial cleansing. She then looked at my skin under a UV lamp, although she didn’t tell me what it was or the condition of my skin. She only briefly explained what she was doing and why, even though I had said that I had not had a facial before (not true; it was only a test). Next in the process, she turned on a humidifier which blew warm, moist air over my face to help open up the pores in preparation for the deep pore cleansing. After the cleansing, she slathered a mask on my face and placed cotton pads soaked in a botanical solution, said to help reduce puffiness, on my eyes. She then rubbed a rich cream on my hands and slipped them into what looked like oven mitts made out of heating pads. I was then left alone to relax and soak in the treatments. After about 10 minutes, the therapist returned. She finished the treatment with a brief face and scalp acupressure massage, and then applied moisturizer to my face. The final touch was the Olive Oil Lip Treatment, which felt like nothing more than a very thick lip gloss. Before I left, she recommended a few face care procedures. When I went out to pay the bill, there was a small assortment of face care products, waiting on the counter, for me to purchase.
