Overview

If you think that spas are for adults only, this Phoenix spa is out to change your mind.

In addition to treatments for women and men, the Arizona Grand Spa, formerly known as Phantom Horse Spa, has a specialized spa menu just for kids.

This Arizona day spa has been voted one of the top ten kid-friendly spas in the United States by Child Magazine (2002) for its spa treatments for children.

Friendly service, diverse treatments, great facilities and a kid-friendly atmosphere make this a good choice for the entire family.

Located in the Arizona Grand Athletic Club (aka Phantom Horse Athletic Club) at the sprawling, 164-acre Arizona Grand Resort - formerly known as Pointe South Mountain Resort - this property is a family friendly, all-suite resort.

It’s Spanish Colonial architecture and Mediterranean-style plantings evoke an Old World atmosphere.

The resort has undergone a $52 million renovation.

Completed in 2009, the 640-room property has new room interiors, a new entrance and lobby, new restaurants, new landscaping, golf course upgrades and a 5-acre addition to the 10-acre Oasis Water Park.

The Arizona Grand Resort is just south of downtown Phoenix, near the Tempe border, and up against the base of South Mountain Park; making this a good resort for those who want to be near desert hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding.

Concept

This Phoenix spa’s treatments focus on bringing mind, body and spirit into balance.

The former Phantom Horse Spa therapies are designed to work through the nervous and muscular systems, helping to eliminate the impurities that contribute to imbalance, muscle tension and pain.

The spa menu offers a full line of massages, body treatments, scrubs and facials.

Spa ingredients span the range of healing botanicals including aloe, seaweed, sage, Chardonnay grape seed, Fiji sugar and even coffee.

The spa also offers seasonal spa treatments such as the Pomegranate Pedicure ($80 including tax and gratuity) in November and the Sugar Plum Soufflé Massage Cream ($145 including tax and gratuity) in December.

The kid’s spa menu includes the Pretty Princess Package ($80/90 minutes; ages 6 to 11) featuring a Pretty Princess manicure and pedicure with glittering polish or gemstones and a glamorous hairstyle session.

At the end, your little princess can take home her own jeweled tiara.

Active teenagers will appreciate the Teen Sports Massage ($100/50 minutes; ages 13 to 18).

This treatment is a deep tissue massage that incorporates stretching and will be customized to target the muscle groups used in your teen’s sport or activity of choice.

Atmosphere

Arizona Grand Spa (aka Phantom Horse Spa) is on the second floor of a large tower-like building at the back of the resort.

It is larger than it appears from the outside.

The spa’s interior has a Southwestern décor with light wood furniture and earth-toned fabrics and paints.

The Spa Lounge is a quiet space with deep red chairs, lounges and ottomans, baskets filled with magazines and lush house plants.

One table holds containers of cool water flavored with orange or apple slices.

A generous platter held a variety of sliced fruit including watermelon, strawberries, pineapple and bunches of grapes.

There is also a nice outdoor flagstone and brick patio with rattan lounge chairs, a beehive fireplace, and a small garden with a waterfall and stream.

My Treatment Experience

The Arizona Grand Spa staff were very professional and courteous. Upon learning that it was my first visit, the helpful and friendly Spa Attendant gave me a tour of the facility and explained all of the former Phantom Horse Spa’s amenities.

I chose the Desert Sage Body Mask ($185/80 minutes), a Phantom Horse Spa signature treatment.

My therapist was a cordial woman who had a calming manner. She began by exfoliating my back, arms and legs with a dry Ayate cloth, woven from the fibers of the native agave plant.

Afterwards, she applied a sage emollient, which had the rich, herbal scent of the desert after a rainfall.

Sage has been used by Native Americans for centuries for its antioxidant, astringent and anti-inflammatory properties.

She then wrapped me in a layer of warm blankets under a set of heating lamps and left me to relax for several minutes.

I then rinsed off the sage mask in the treatment room’s private shower.

After I was settled back under a fresh set of warm blankets, the therapist gave me a soothing shoulder and neck massage with a rich sage lotion.

This treatment was both soothing and invigorating and left my skin silky soft and smooth.
