Four Season Weather in Payson is Great for Year-round Activities
Payson weather has four distinct seasons.
At 5,000 feet elevation, Payson is a mountain town that’s a good gateway for desert dwellers looking to escape summer’s heat or enjoy winter’s snow. The moderate climate is perfect for the area because Payson is a popular outdoor recreation destination. Summers in Payson are warm but not too hot and just right for fishing, boating or swimming. Payson does receive snow in winter but it’s not extreme. Higher elevations outside of town in the forests along the Mogollon Rim, however, will have greater snow depths, making these areas the place to go for winter cross country skiing or snow play. Payson weather can be easily summed up as not too hot and not too cold. Plus, weather in Payson means mainly sunny days on average. Payson Weather in Spring
As with many regions in the U.S., Payson AZ weather in spring can be unpredictable.March daytime temperatures will hover in the low 60°s and can dip to below freezing overnight. By May, temperatures will generally rise to the high 70°s. Some years, it’s even warmer. Rain and snow are also possible.
Payson Weather in Summer

July is the hottest month with average daytime temperatures in the 90°s. As the summer monsoon thunderstorm season begins, humidity levels rise. The rain, thunder, lightning and high winds of the monsoon season are possible anytime from the end of June through mid-September. On average, most Payson rain falls in August with an average precipitation of 2-3 inches. Monsoon thunderstorms generally blow in and out quickly, so they rarely put a damper on outdoor activity. When the monsoon thunderstorms come in, they do drop the temperatures into the 70°s and even the 60°s. Summer nights are comfortable.
Payson Weather in Autumn
By the end of September, the monsoon has died out and the weather in Payson turns to warm sunny days and cool nights.September daytime temperatures are around 80°F. By late October and November, temperatures will be in the 60°s. Autumn nights are cooler, dipping into the 40°s by October and causing the leaves to change color. This is a great time to go "leaf peeping" around Payson.
Payson Weather in Winter
Winter Payson AZ weather can be quite cold overnight with lows in the 20°s and even the teens.Daytime temperatures are pleasant by northern U.S. standards with highs in the 50°s. On average, December and January are the coldest months. Payson weather in winter may have rain, snow, hail or sleet. But these are not everyday occurrences. Many days are sunny and crisp. Payson snow may start falling in November and can happen as late as April. However, in general, most snow falls in December and January. Daily average snow fall is under an inch. Daily average snow depth is generally less than one inch too, although one year a snow depth of almost 50 inches was recorded one December day. Most often though, the snow melts before becoming too much trouble. However, head up into the higher elevations around Payson and the snow depths will be much greater and will last longer.
