Driving from New Mexico
to Arizona


New Mexico to Arizona Driving Directions and Map


There are two main routes to drive from New Mexico to Arizona.

From Northern New Mexico, you can take Interstate 40 (I-40) from Gallup into northern Arizona.

Continue on I-40 to Flagstaff, Arizona.

From this point, you must turn south on Interstate 17 to reach Phoenix.

If you’re driving from Southern New Mexico, you can take Interstate 10 (I-10) from the Lordsburg / Las Cruces area and drive west to Tucson, Arizona.

From Tucson, Interstate 10 heads north to Phoenix.

There are many smaller two-lane highways from New Mexico into Arizona via:

  • the Navajo Nation
  • central Arizona through the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest
  • Highway 80 in southeastern Arizona which will take you to the world- renowned, birding hot spot of the Chiricahua Mountains, and south on to Douglas, Arizona at the Mexican border.

Be sure to inquire locally before driving from New Mexico into Arizona on these secondary roads.

Weather conditions and other factors may close the roads or create delays.

√ Arizona Driving Tip: The Navajo Nation is a sovereign nation, so obey all posted speed limit and access signs and stay on major roads.
