This Arizona destination spa offers the ultimate spa escape with a wealth of amenities, an excellent spa services menu that focuses on health and healing and luxurious spa casitas.

We loved its contemporary Southwestern atmosphere and its incredible red rock setting.

It was a great place to spend the day, swimming and basking in the warmth of the Sedona sun and the amazing views.

This is the kind of spa that made us want spend a month here, just relaxing and rejuvenating.

Mii amo Spa is hidden away in the gorgeous red rocks of Boynton Canyon – one of the Sedona energy vortex spots.

Th spa is part of the lovely Enchantment Resort - a Southwestern style, village-like property of adobe casitas sensitively integrated into 70 acres of pinyon pine- and juniper-dotted high desert.

Before you make your reservation, you should know that it takes about 20 minutes to make the drive northwest of central Sedona to reach the property.

Surrounded on all sides by the Red Rock-Secret Mountain Wilderness, Enchantment Resort gave us exactly what we were looking for - a chance to completely escape the noise and bustle of city life.

Even though it is out of town, Enchantment is worth the trip for its peaceful and secluded setting.

There are very few roads on the grounds, helping to keep the atmosphere serene and quiet.

The resort has all the amenities you could want including pools, tennis and three restaurants.

In this spectacular setting, it was easy to just relax and enjoy a slower pace of life.

Unspoiled by street lights, the night sky unfurled its twinkling lights to reveal millions of stars in the sky.

Daybreak brought only the flute-like call of canyon wrens and the sigh of the wind through the pines.

Mii amo Spa took inspiration from this idea of a journey to create an ultimate destination spa.

Every aspect of Mii amo – from its spa services menu to its design – are meant to help guide you on your way to achieving greater physical health, emotional well-being and spiritual renewal.

Treatments focus on health, nutrition, mindfulness and connecting with the spirit.

Mii amo doesn’t tell you how to be. It shows you the possibilities and lets your intuition lead the way.

The spa services menu is extensive and diverse.

Some therapies take inspiration from the traditions and wisdom of the Native American cultures that have inhabited the region for centuries.

Treatments such as the Blue Corn Polish, the High Desert Facial and the Jojoba Butter Wrap ($135/60 minutes each) use traditional native ingredients.

In keeping with Sedona’s reputation as a center for New Age healing, Mii amo Spa offers many energy and spirit treatments like:

• Reiki – a Japanese energy healing technique that attunes the energy flow within the body ($135/60 minutes),
• Aura-Soma Color Reading – a healing system from England based on vibrant, alive plant color, essential oils and flower essences ($195/60 minutes),
• Body Feng Shui – incorporating an intuitive reading and an energy balancing massage designed to help bring clarity and balance to your life ($195/60 minutes).

Mii amo Spa also offers treatments from Ayurveda – the 5,000 year old sciences of life health care system developed in India.

Ayurveda believes that we can achieve a balanced lifestyle by maintaining our specific and unique physical and mental characteristics.

You can arrange for an Ayurvedic lifestyle consultation, Ayurvedic herbal treatments and the Abhyanga – the traditional Ayurvedic full body massage that uses two therapists who work in synchrony ($270/60 minutes).

One of Mii amo Spa’s best features are its spa casitas.

These accommodations give you the chance to completely immerse yourself in the spa experience.

The 16 one- and two-story contemporary Southwest style casitas are clustered around a central garden courtyard.

All casitas have fireplaces, a private patio or balcony and custom-tiled, Scandinavian-inspired soaking tubs.

The Mii amo Spa casitas are only available as part of the 3-night, 4-night or 7-night Spa Journey packages (rates vary by season and start at $1,740 per person), which are individualized to each guests needs.

The Great Hall at Mii amo Spa

Although it is much smaller than Enchantment Resort, it has so many amenities and services that we didn’t want to leave.

Given its New Age angle, you might think Mii amo Spa would have an "airy-fairy" feel.

We were pleasantly surprised to find that the spa has a clean, contemporary look.

It doesn’t have the distinctly Southwestern atmosphere of Enchantment Resort.

Instead, Mii amo Sedona incorporates deep-toned, southwestern colors into a stream-lined, contemporary design.

Rooms have a spacious, open feel.

We never felt crowded or confined, even though there were quite a few guests during our visit.

Treatment rooms are on the second floor – leaving the ground floor for all of Mii amo’s luxurious amenities.

One huge room has an indoor pool and whirlpool as well as a luxurious sitting area with a fireplace.

Outside, there is a a lap pool with a spacious patio that has great views of Boynton Canyon.

One of the first spaces you’ll encounter is the Crystal Grotto – a circular, domed space modeled after the kivas found in many North American cultures.

Its centerpiece is a fountain made of wood with a huge quartz crystal at its center.

A small skylight lets in a stream of natural light and illuminates the other crystals that are tucked into niches around the wall.

The Grotto is a place of meditation and rejuvenation. Outside its door sits a small box where, on strips of paper, you can write your intention for the day.

At the back of the building is the Mii amo Spa Café. They serve healthy and delicious breakfasts, lunch and dinner as well as poolside fare.

The light and airy dining room includes an exhibition style kitchen and the 16-seat chef’s table – a communal space where diners can share a meal with other spa goers.

Mii amo Spa turned out to be the perfect place for someone new to the spa experience.

Jeff was scheduled for the Swedish Massage ($135 for 60 minutes).

But as his therapist began, she realized that he had significant problem spots in his back that required more work than the typical long strokes of a Swedish massage.

She used a variety of techniques including deep tissue and reflexology to address his specific physical issues.

At the treatment’s end, she recommended further massage therapy as well as acupuncture to address his specific imbalances.

Jeff’s first words after his treatment: "Men don’t know what they’re missing!"

His treatment was wonderful; he had never felt so refreshed and invigorated.

I opted for the Vibrational Massage ($135 for 60 minutes).

This unique therapy - designed to help clear one’s chakras - is quite different from a traditional massage.

What is a chakra?

According to the traditional Indian medical system known as Ayurveda, chakras are the primary energy centers of the body.

There are seven main chakras located along the spine, beginning at the base and running up to the top of the head.

Chakras – the Sanskrit word for wheels - are said to look like "whirling disks of light."

Each chakra is associated with specific functions in the body as well as specific spiritual, emotional and psychological issues and how we handle those issues, both internally and externally.

Every chakra has its own unique energy and color.

Because the chakras are "centers of force," where we absorb and process life energies and experiences, the chakras can become imbalanced due to long term physical tension and emotional stress.

Balancing of the chakras can help eliminate these blockages and is said to lead to increased well being.

During the Vibrational Massage, my therapist used the Body Bliss Vibrational Oils – a unique line of seven massage oil blends that are specially formulated by an energy master.

Body Bliss Oils are blends of essential oils and base oils, such as almond or avocado oil, and are imprinted with color, light, essences and precious gemstones.

Each oil blend is attuned to a specific chakra color and vibrational frequency.

These oils help to relax these centers so that the energy can flow easily and freely again.

The treatment began with me lying face up on a massage table.

The therapist started at the 7th chakra, also known as the crown chakra, located at the top of my head.

First, she rubbed the corresponding Body Bliss oil on her hands, then waved her hands above my face.

Instantly I smelled lavender, sage and ylang-ylang. She then massaged the chakra using specific hand movements to help clear the chakra.

Creative visualization is an important part of this therapy.

Unlike most massages, my therapist spoke throughout the treatment.

While she massaged each chakra, her words guided my mind to what I should visualize.

She told me to "see" the pure white light of the crown chakra; to feel bathed in the healing light and energy of this chakra which is said to be the center of divine knowledge.

Next she moved to the 6th chakra which sits between the eyebrows, just above the bridge of the nose.

The color of this chakra is indigo blue and it is associated with emotional and mental intelligence and intuition.

She repeated this pattern with each chakra as she moved down my body.

I then turned over and she repeated the process with each chakra as she moved down my back.

At the end, I felt amazingly clear-headed, calm and energized.

This is a unique treatment. while it would be beneficial for anyone, some might see it as being too New Age and have difficulty with the concept and visualizations.

Our therapists were really wonderful.

It was great to be able to have a healthy meal right after we had a treatment without having to leave the spa.

The café is at the far end of the building, set away from the rest of the spa.

The indoor dining room is a quiet and serene space. Outside, the patio looks out to Boynton Canyon.

The food is great.

It is spa cuisine so that means it’s healthy and light but it is also flavorful and satisfying.

Dishes such as...

• sesame-crusted ahi tuna with wasabi potato puree and shiitake mushrooms and tamari ginger sauce
• grilled free-range chicken breast with mushroom barley and roasted shallot cabernet sauce

• cold smoked and grilled buffalo tenderloin with horseradish potato cake and tomato chipotle jus

The menu lists the calories, fat, protein and carbohydrate amounts for each dish.

If you’ve had an Ayurvedic consultation, you will be able to choose the perfect dishes for your constitution.

Just pick dishes that have the symbols denoting kapha-, vata- and pitta-pacifying foods.

• Mii amo Spa is only open to registered guests of Enchantment Resort and those staying at the Mii amo Spa casitas.
• Spa treatments must be guaranteed with a hotel confirmation number.
• Mii amo Spa does not have a salon.
• The spa recommends that you reserve your spa appointments at least three weeks in advance; allow additional time for appointments on holidays and weekends.

Treatments are designed to promote relaxation, rejuvenation, cleansing and balance such as:

• Sedona Clay Wrap ($135/60 minutes): your entire body is wrapped in mineral rich Sedona clay which will nourish and detoxify the skin,
• Watsu ($135/60 minutes) – an aquatic bodywork based on stretching and Shiatsu performed in warm water that helps stretch and open up the spine,
• Rejuvenating Facial ($135/60 minutes) uses natural fruit acids from fresh grapes and apples to detoxify and exfoliate the skin,
• Mii amo Crystal Bath ($135/60 minutes) using special essential oils and crystals placed around the tub,
• Spirit and Mindfulness sessions such as Astrology ($250/60 minutes), Past Life Regression ($250/90 minutes), Psychic Massage ($$195/60minutes), Meditation ($135/60 minutes) and Inner Discovery ($135/60 minutes),
• Nail Care Services offers a variety of specialty manicures and pedicures.

In addition to individual services, Mii amo Spa has several day packages such as the Day of Detoxification ($407.10) and the Ultimate Stretch ($454.30), which use therapies like Watsu, Table Thai and Lymphatic Drainage to rejuvenate and cleanse the body.
