Spend any time around Grand Canyon Village and the park might seem as developed as any city. But make no mistake; the majority of the park is wilderness. Never start off any excursion without some good Grand Canyon maps, even if you’re just walking the Rim Trail. It’s too easy to get tempted to hike down into the canyon or even to get lost on some of the less developed trails. If you will be hiking below the rim, a good map is an absolutely essential piece of safety equipment. The National Park Service is a great resource for a map of the Grand Canyon. They have many free maps that provide general overviews of the park, park attractions, and hiking trail maps. If you’ll be backpacking into the canyon, don’t start your trip without first visiting the park’s Backcountry Information Center. Also, be sure to get the applicable USGS topographic map for the trail you’ll be backpacking. These can be purchased directly from the USGS web site or at many map stores. It’s not meant to be relied on for detailed planning and route-finding.
