Ventana Canyon Spa Overview
Ventana Canyon Resort is one of the Tucson luxury resorts. But you wouldn't know it from visiting Ventana's Lakeside Spa. | | The Santa Catalina Mountains rise behind Ventana Canyon Resort | Compact and with a suburban home feel, this is not a spa for those looking to spend the day lounging in a luxurious spa resort environment. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the Lakeside Spa for its friendly staff and nice selection of therapeutic, moderately priced treatments. Ventana Canyon Resort is on Tucson's northeast side. Tucked against the craggy Santa Catalina Mountains, this four star resort is known for its award-winning golf course and scenic desert setting. It is also kid friendly and pet friendly, making it a good choice for families. Rates are high (over $300/night) during the busy winter-spring season but you can get great summer resort deals, when room rates drop to the low $100s. Back to Top of Page
Lakeside Spa Concept
Lakeside Spa doesn't have a "high concept" theme like many of the larger Arizona resort spas. | | The entrance to Lakeside Spa | It's all about the basics of relaxation and rejuvenation here. Ventana Canyon spa's menu is short but offers all the essential spa treatments. Therapeutic massages include sports massage, prenatal massage and reflexology. Restorative facials and hydrating and detoxifying body treatments focus on rejuvenating and firming the skin. In addition to 50-minute and 75-minute treatments, Lakeside Spa also has a small selection of 25-minute treatments for $30 or $65, which is a nice offering for those who are short on time or money. The Lakeside Spa also has a full salon offering hair design, manicures and pedicures and makeup services. Back to Top of Page
Atmosphere at the Ventana Canyon Spa
The Lakeside Spa is in a separate building across from Ventana Canyon Resort. | | The vanity area inside the women’s locker room | This is "fitness central" for the property. The tennis center, golf shop and fitness center are all in this building along with the spa. Spa goers share the small locker rooms with tennis players and those using the fitness center. Although the Lakeside Spa building is next to Ventana Canyon Resort’s manmade lake, the spa itself does not have any lake views. The spa interior is dimly lit. Dark wood furniture, violet-blue corridor walls and a tan- and terracotta-colored style carpet gave a vaguely Southwestern atmosphere. The women’s locker room is small with terracotta-tiled floors, granite countertops and rosy pink painted walls. There are just two shower stalls as well as a row of sinks, a steam room and a dry sauna. | | The lap pool at the Lakeside Spa | A seated vanity area at the front of the locker room had a counter and sink equipped with a single hair dryer. The pre-treatment relaxation room was more spacious. It was simply furnished with comfortable couches and potted plants. A small table held assorted hot teas and lemon water. Behind the Ventana Canyon spa is a seventeen yard, adults-only lap pool. While this pool is adults only, it is open to resort guests too. Back to Top of Page
My Treatment Experience at Lakeside Spa
Feeling parched after days of desert sightseeing, I decided to try the Hydra-Quench Cocoon ($100/50 minutes). | | The spa Relaxation Room | The Lakeside Spa menu said this treatment would "rebalance sluggish cells and leave my skin feeling silky and my body calmly re-energized." My therapist led me to a spacious treatment room equipped with its own shower. After I settled down onto the well-padded treatment table, the therapist began to gently exfoliate my body with a dry brush. She explained that dry brushing helps slough off any dead or loose skin cells, thereby allowing the skin to better absorb the gel. Next, she coated my limbs, back and shoulders with the marine gel. The gel felt soothing and cool. Not only did it feel good, it's quite healthy. | | The bathroom sink area at the spa | The essential oil-infused seawater gel provides all 104 trace minerals that our cells need. Once I was fully coated, she wrapped me in plastic and then in layers of sheets. While I rested in my cocoon, backside down, she gave me a wonderful scalp massage and facial acupressure. After 20 minutes, she left the room so I could shower off the gel. Once I had finished, she returned to apply a light, moisturizing oil to my skin as the final flourish. The Hydra-Quench Cocoon really did leave my skin feeling smooth as satin and nicely hydrated. This spa treatment was surprisingly energizing and I was ready to hike the desert trails again. Service at the Lakeside Spa
The Ventana Canyon Spa has a very friendly and helpful staff. There's no upscale snootiness here. Everyone was eager to help and ensure that I had a positive and relaxing experience. | | The showers and sauna in the women’s locker room at the Ventana Canyon Spa | Back to Top of Page
