Tusayan AZ Lodging is the Closest Alternative to Staying in the Park
Many visitors end up staying in hotels near Grand Canyon rather than inside the park, generally for one of two reasons.
Either they’ve tried to book a room in the park and found that all rooms were already sold out, or they need a more affordable option. | | Tusayan, Arizona is one mile south of the Grand Canyon South Rim park entrance | No matter what the reason, Tusayan AZ lodging is a good alternative to a Grand Canyon accommodation. Located about a mile outside the national park entrance on Highway 64, the tiny town of Tusayan, Arizona is the closest town to the Grand Canyon’s South Rim. Tusayan itself is roughly one mile long and serves as the gateway to the canyon. There are a small number of hotels, restaurants, stores and an IMAX® theater here. Rooms at Tusayan hotels do not have any views of the Grand Canyon, and only overlook the town or surrounding forest. If you're new to traveling to the parks, there are few important things to know about lodging in and around a national park. Demand outweighs supply, costs may be seasonally high, and the rooms get more than the average amount of normal wear and tear. We recommend visiting the Grand Canyon South Rim during the “shoulder seasons” of spring and fall for fewer crowds and lower hotel prices. Hotels near Grand Canyon - and inside the park - can fill up quickly during the busy summer season, so it's wise to make your Grand Canyon reservations well in advance if you'll be visiting during that time. If you’re concerned about waiting in a long line to enter the park, try the easy and convenient Grand Canyon National Park South Rim Shuttle Bus System. You can leave your car in Tusayan and use this free "park and ride" shuttle bus service to go into the park and get to the various Grand Canyon attractions. Known as the Purple Route, the bus service operates during the summer only. It’s a wonderful option for traveling into the park. Note that if you are entering the park on the shuttle bus, you must present a valid park entrance pass, which you can purchase at various businesses in Tusayan as well as at the park entrances. If you can't find any park hotels or Tusayan AZ hotels with vacancies, your other options for hotels near Grand Canyon are hotels in Williams, AZ, about 57 miles south, or in Flagstaff, roughly 80 miles southeast of the park.

Holiday Inn Express - Grand Canyon Village South This is our favorite of all the hotels near Grand Canyon. Renovated in 2009, it has two buildings and a total of 164 non-smoking rooms. The main building has a small indoor pool and whirlpool. The suites building at the back of the complex only has an indoor whirlpool. We stayed in one of the 32 suites. Our one bedroom suite was comfortable, clean and quiet. The living room featured a desk, couch, coffee table and a wall-mounted TV. Plus, there was plenty of room for storing our luggage. Although the bathroom was small, an alcove just outside it had a separate sink and counter, and a microwave and mini-fridge. The bedroom had an armoire and a TV. This Tusayan hotel’s free breakfast, though not gourmet, is adequate and includes yogurt, cereal, egg and cheese omelets, bacon, fruit, toast, juice, coffee, tea and the hotel chain's signature cinnamon rolls. Our only complaint is with the hotel's free wireless internet service. We were never able to logon from our room during our entire stay. Amenities: microwave and mini-refrigerator in the suites, coffee maker, free newspaper delivered to your room.

Best Western Grand Canyon Squire Inn The Grand Canyon Squire Inn is one of the most popular of the Tusayan hotels near Grand Canyon. Although there are no true Grand Canyon resorts, the Grand Canyon Squires Inn bills itself as a resort style property. And, it does have a lot of amenities compared to other hotels near Grand Canyon. The hotel lobby is an odd combination of marble floors, neon, western art, rock walls and a waterfall. A very small cowboy museum features Arizona cowboy artifacts. Downstairs, there is a bar and the Family Fun Center with a game arcade, billiards and six lanes of bowling. A salon offers beauty treatments and massage therapies, and a hair stylist is available weekly. The Grand Canyon Squires Inn has 250 non-smoking rooms and suites on 3 floors. Guest rooms have a Southwestern décor, cable satellite TV, coffee maker and AM/FM alarm clock. We found our room to be spacious and relatively clean although there was mold on the ceiling of the bathroom. Also, the oval bathtub was difficult to get in and out of when taking a shower. The free continental breakfast offered simple fare and was held in a very large room that was very crowded. The Best Western also has two restaurants. The Canyon Cafe coffee shop is out front along Hwy. 64 and it is mostly a breakfast and lunch restaurant. Seasonal dinner buffets are offered. The Coronado Room features fine dining. Amenities: free internet access, free continental breakfast, seasonal outdoor pool and whirlpool, sauna, exercise room, gift shop, meeting rooms
Rates: $99 - $220

The Grand Hotel Out of all the Tusayan hotels near Grand Canyon, the 3 story Grand Hotel looks the most like a national park lodge. You can’t miss it when you first drive into town as it’s quite large and has an impressive, rustic wood and stone exterior. The interiors continue the Western lodge look with high, wood-beamed ceilings and wood floors. The lobby has a large stone fireplace, a Starbucks coffee stand and a gift shop. All 121 rooms are non-smoking. Room amenities include a coffee maker and Bath & Body Works amenities. Deluxe rooms have a balcony or patio. We enjoyed our dinner at the hotel’s Canyon Star Restaurant and Saloon. This western style restaurant is so big it seats 300 people. The Southwestern menu is heavy on steak and potato fare, but does have a few vegetarian options. As with most Grand Canyon dining, we did not expect a gourmet meal. However, the food was decent and filling. What we liked the best was the music. On most nights, the Canyon Star has live entertainment. During our meal, a cowboy musician sang Western tunes. After his performance, a Native American flutist played beautiful, traditional songs. Both performers were talented and added to the ambiance of the meal. Amenities: small heated indoor pool and whirlpool, adjacent fitness center, on-site guest self laundry.
Rates: $99 - $329

The Canyon Plaza Resort has 232 smoking and non-smoking rooms and suites on 3 floors. Although titled as a resort, the Canyon Plaza has simple rooms. As it is an older property, the rooms are a bit smaller than modern standards. All guest rooms have a coffee maker and desk. Suites include a microwave, refrigerator, two vanity areas, sitting area and coffee table. Deluxe rooms have a balcony or patio. This is one of the few hotels near Grand Canyon that is pet friendly. JJK's restaurant serves basic American food all day. The hotel offers a modest but free continental breakfast. There is an extra fee for hot breakfast items.
