This Tucson spa takes inspiration from its desert locale, incorporating local plants and native cultural traditions into the spa's soothing treatments. Hashani Spa also takes advantage of its beautiful setting with picture windows that capture the scenic desert and mountain views and let in an abundance of natural light. A warm Southwestern atmosphere, spacious feel and variety of amenities made me want to linger long after my treatment ended.
Great service, a friendly staff and a good menu of treatments make this one of my favorite Tucson spas. The Marriott Starr Pass Resort is tucked away on the Tucson’s west side amid the rocky, cactus-studded Tucson Mountains. The 20-minute drive out of town will make you feel like you’ve left the city far behind. Opened in January 2005, this $200 million dollar, six-story Tucson spa resort feels like a real destination getaway. The Southwestern-style property has an Old West ambience with wood beam ceilings and desert-toned décor. Although its out of town, the resort's sweeping mountain and desert views, great restaurants and scenic golf course make it worth the drive. Hashani Spa ConceptHashani spa’s design incorporates what the Sonoran Desert's native cultures have known for centuries.
The sights, sounds, scents and plants of the Sonoran Desert have healing properties. This Tucson spa’s treatments combine these elements with modern health and beauty techniques. In addition to classic massages and facials, Hashani Spa also offers a good selection of alternative health treatments including myofascial release, lymphatic drainage, cranial sacral therapy, Thai massage and Ayurvedic treatments. What does Hashani mean? The name is derived from the local Tohono O’odham Indian word for "saguaro." The tall, often branched saguaro cactus is a symbol of the Sonoran Desert. The plant is so important to the Tohono O’odham way of life and culture that they refer to it as "one of the People." Hashani Spa AtmosphereHashani Spa is a full service spa spread out over three levels and feels quite spacious.
Clients begin upstairs at the check-in desk and descend down a spiral staircase (or the elevator) to the second floor Fitness Center and the Spa Lounge and treatment rooms on the bottom floor. The Starr Pass Spa's interior reflects its desert surroundings. Earth-toned walls and fabrics harmonize with the sweeping desert views outside. Native American flute music drifting out from the sound system added a sense of tranquility. You can relax before your treatment in the airy Spa Lounge, which is filled with plenty of soft-cushioned rattan lounge chairs and ottomans. Floor-to-ceiling windows look out to the resort’s pools and terraces and the cactus-covered Tucson Mountains beyond. A long counter is well stocked with large containers of water flavored with fresh watermelon and strawberries and Hashani’s own hot tea blends. You can also wait out on the patio outside the lounge where there is direct access to Hashani Spa’s own private lap pool and Jacuzzi, in addition to the resort’s two main pools. The Spa’s café, Blossom, offers al fresco dining poolside with a menu of panini sandwiches and wraps, salads, mineral waters and smoothies. My Treatment Experience at Hashani SpaI tried Hashani Spa's Hot Stone Therapy (50 minutes for $125), an ancient Native American healing treatment.
As you might guess from the name, the massage therapist uses heated basalt stones to massage the body instead of the hands. The stones are perfectly smooth like river rocks, so there's no need to worry about rough edges. This therapy is offered at many Arizona spas and I was very curious to try it. My therapist was a kind, gentle-natured man who quickly made me feel at ease. He carefully explained the hot stone technique and how he would use the stones. He heated the stones to a very warm temperature and then began to work first on one side of my body and then the other, using long, gentle massage-like strokes. He varied the size of the stones according to which body part he worked on; small stones for hands, feet and face, larger ones for thighs, calves and back. The feeling of having warm, smooth stones massaged on sore, tired muscles is pure bliss. I would never have imagined that the rounded surfaces would feel so soothing and gentle. A massage with warm stones is quite unlike any other body treatment experience. I highly recommend it for everyone. Favorite Feature at Hashani SpaIt’s a toss up between the wonderful Hot Stone Therapy and the lovely Spa Lounge, where I felt like I could relax all day, sipping the flavorful watermelon water and gazing out at the gorgeous mountain view.Fast Facts: Hashani Spa Tucson at the JW Marriott Starr Pass ResortWhat to Know Before You Go:
