Where is the Grand Canyon?
Inquiries about the Grand Canyon location are one of the most common questions we get.
When we tell people who aren’t from Arizona that we’re going to the park, they inevitably ask “Where is the Grand Canyon? Isn’t it in Nevada?” A quick look at a map reveals that the Grand Canyon is located in the northwest section of the state of Arizona, near southern Utah and southeastern Nevada.

For those who’ve never been there, the Grand Canyon location is a source of confusion fueled in part by the Nevada tourism industry. The Grand Canyon shows up in many Nevada tourism ads even thought the Canyon isn’t in Nevada. This is because more than 37 million visitors travel to Las Vegas, Nevada every year and many of them also want to see the Grand Canyon. As a result of this demand, a large number of Grand Canyon tours leave from Las Vegas. These tours are heavily marketed and very busy. The result has been the popular misconception that the Grand Canyon is in Nevada. In fact, the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park is about 277 miles from Las Vegas. Adding to the confusion was the 2007 opening of the Grand Canyon Skywalk, a U-shaped walkway stretching 70 feet over the Canyon's edge. The walkway’s glass floor provides a bird’s eye—and heart-stopping— view into the canyon. The Skywalk is located outside of Grand Canyon National Park on the Hualapai Indian Reservation in an area known as the West Rim. The West Rim is about a 121-mile drive from Las Vegas, making it a closer destination than Grand Canyon National Park for travelers who are short on time. Where is the Grand Canyon Located?
