Grand Canyon IMAX

Get a Bird's Eye View of the Grand Canyon from the Comfort of Your Chair

The Grand Canyon IMAX® theater is one of the most popular Grand Canyon activities even though it isn’t even in the park.

Located in the town of Tusayan, the National Geographic Visitor Center and IMAX® movie theater draws crowds of tourists daily. It does have a "touristy" feel, but does offer quite a bit of basic Grand Canyon information.

Outside, the sprawling site has exhibits including, the Grand Canyon Base Camp #1, which has information about hiking, river rafting and the canyon’s natural history.

Inside, the National Geographic Visitor Center has Grand Canyon and sightseeing brochures.

An official National Park Service ranger staffs an information desk, ready to offer insider advice, tips and suggestions.

You can also pick up your National Park Pass here, which is good for 14 days and gives you access to both the South Rim & the North Rim.

The visitor center also has a National Geographic store, a small food court with a Pizza Hut Express and a travel desk where you can book Grand Canyon tours through Grand Canyon Expeditions.

The real draw, however, is the Grand Canyon IMAX® movie, called Grand Canyon - The Hidden Secrets.

The IMAX® theater is spacious with comfortable stadium style seating, a 60-foot high screen and digital surround sound.

We weren’t sure what to expect but found that this well-executed film offers an intimate look at the history of the park and a wild, helicopter ride-like view through the Grand Canyon.

It gives everyone a chance to get a feel for what it’s like to be down in the canyon without setting foot there.

The movie depicts early Native American inhabitants and their lifeways.

Our favorite part of the movie was the very realistic re-creation of John Wesley Powell’s epic journey down the Colorado River.

Other film moments include Grand Canyon wildlife and adventure activities.

Don’t miss the replica of one of Powell’s boats, which was used in the film, and now resides in front of the visitor center.
