Don’t get us wrong; we enjoy rock music as much as the next person. But we must confess that neither of us were big fans of Alice Cooper’s hard rock music. However, after eating at his popular Phoenix sports bar, we’re now big fans of his food. Cooper’s downtown Phoenix restaurant is centrally located for sports fans. It sits behind U.S. Airways Center, where the NBA Phoenix Suns basketball team plays. The restaurant is also just down the street from the Chase Field, home of the Major League Baseball Arizona Diamondbacks team.
The concept at Alice Cooperstown is simple - a bar and grill that serves barbecue and home-style cooking and combines sports with rock music. Here, you can catch a game on the monster-sized TVs, listen to a local rock band or just stop in for a good meal. Cooperstown has a variety of special events every month including performances by top local acts and mid-level national touring bands. There is live music most every weekend. Alice Cooperstown also hosts a variety of fundraisers, many for various children’s charities, which feature a variety of local bands. Want to catch a glimpse of the famous rocker? Alice Cooper is a Phoenix area resident and often makes appearances at his popular restaurant. He's also an avid golfer, so you just might see him on the links. Note: This is a very popular spot after sporting events, so expect crowds on game day. Alice Cooperstown CuisineAlice Cooperstown has a diverse menu with most dishes named after famous athletes and rock musicians.
Many of the items are reflective of stadium fare – hamburgers, hot dogs and nachos – except better. Appetizers range from "Myran Frye’s" Meat Lovers Sliders ($10.99) with pepperjack cheese to "Crowd Pleaser" artichoke-spinach dip served with tri-color tortilla chips ($6.99). The "Wings of Mass Destruction" features spicy chicken wings with the addition of the fiery Quetzlzacantenango chile pepper added to the special hot sauce ($9.99 for 10 wings). The extensive menu offers a little something for everyone from burgers and sandwiches to pasta and salads. Burgers range beyond the traditional beef patty to include the "Dan's" turkey burger ($11.99) served with portobello mushrooms and horseradish cheddar sauce and the "Nickie’s" garden burger ($7.99). All burgers are ½-pound and come with a choice of two side dishes. Diners can chose from:
For those who want something other than burgers or sandwiches, you can also get entrée-sized salads, "Sheryl’s" veggie quesadillas ($6.99), "Megadeath" meatloaf ($9.99) and "Clayton’s" Cajun fish fry ($10.99), just to name a few.
Alice Cooperstown is also known for its barbecue. Alice Cooper’s secret rub is smeared onto a variety of meats and slow-cooked over wood. Barbecue dishes include:
Alice Cooperstown has a full bar with a range of drinks including margaritas, Bloody Marys and a variety of beers and ales. There’s also specialty drinks like "Ozzy Osbourne’s" Devil Dog, a mix of Stoli Vanil Vodka, Bailey’s Irish Cream, coffee liqueur, cream and Coca Cola. Atmosphere at Alice CooperstownDespite the rock accents, this is definitely a sports bar first and foremost, and the atmosphere is ultra casual.
The restaurant is a simple brick structure with a spacious outdoor courtyard that’s part patio, part stage. Rockers such as Dave Mustaine, Keanu Reeves and Alice Cooper himself have performed there. Inside, Alice Cooperstown is a large, open space with dark gray walls. A long bar dominates one wall and is flanked with two huge, flat screen TVs always tuned to whichever big games are currently playing. There are 5 giant screen televisions in all as well as 25 monitors so diners can see the game from every part of the restaurant. They also have a state-of-the-art video and sound system. Cooperstown shows all of the NFL games as well as NCAA games.
Dark, square tables fill the rest of the interior and are decorated with various Alice Cooper items including images of old concert tickets, concert photos and backstage passes. The highlight of the décor is the impressive wall called the Fender Wall of Fame, featuring signature model Fender guitars from legendary musicians including Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath and Fleetwood Mac. The guitars are rotated regularly, so you’ll see a different collection on subsequent visits. Autographed photos of famous celebrities who’ve visited the restaurant adorn this wall and the bathroom walls. Jeff particularly liked the photo of Alice Cooper with Groucho Marx in the men’s bathroom. Do some searching and you’re sure to find your favorite rocker or athlete. All of the staff, both male and female, wears the trademark Alice Cooper kohl-black makeup around the eyes.
For the women, black low cut, midriff-baring crop tops and tight, black low rise pants completed their hard rocker look. If you have an Alice Cooper fan in your life, don’t leave his downtown Phoenix restaurant without stopping by the gift shop. All souvenirs carry various Cooperstown and Alice Cooper logos or the signature black eyes. Items include baseball caps, t-shirts, sweatshirts, shot glasses, drumsticks and even a baby’s bib. For barbecue fans, you can pick up a bottle of one of Alice Cooper’s famous barbecue sauces, the spice rub or the "House of Fire" hot sauce. Our Meal at Alice CooperstownWe opted for sandwiches. The "Steve Finley" fish sandwich was huge with a ½-pound of whitefish filet, beer-battered and Cajun-seasoned, and served on a sub roll ($9.99).
It was delicious, neither too spicy nor too greasy as some fish sandwiches can be. The "Cox" Clubhouse ($8.99) featured a grilled chicken breast with sweet garlic mayo, bacon, jalapeño jack cheese, lettuce and tomato. It tasted great with a good balance of hot and sweet. We found the staff to be very down-to-earth. Don’t let the dark clothes and makeup put you off. Everyone here was very friendly and helpful and the service was quick and efficient.
